Changes at KPL

First Mindy has changed from 3-7pm to a shorter 3-6pm. We're still not used to her shorter show, though it is nice to hear Robbie a little earlier in the evening.

Now, I just noticed that the Friday evening lineup has been shifted as well. Instead of 13under13 at 10pm and the weekly "special" at 11pm (ET), the 13under13 will be at 8pm and the special at 9pm. I like that change!

Laurie Berkner LIVE!

Did you catch the show?? Were you able to go?? Please share any thoughts or photos, we'd love to hear. (We were up in the woods and not able to tune in......) I hope that the concert was amazing and that the band was rocking out!

Interview - Sally Ride

While we only caught part of the interview (we were up in the mountains where we had "shadows") with Sally Ride, my girls were left with a very lasting impression. I think that Mindy and Sally talking together is one of the absolute, very best things that we have ever heard on Kids Place Live, no kidding. While we love the music and book interviews, and even more the interviews with people with cool jobs (like that LEGO design guy), this one topped them all. Sally has been into outer space. And she shared it with the kids. The awesome, so called "immature" fun of being in space -- like juice balls in space.... along with her mom's fear of Sally's mission. I am always so happy to hear when adults with extremely interesting, high-pressure jobs can still find the fun and relate that fun to the kids.

So thank you Sally Ride and Mindy, for one of the most awesome KPL interviews ever.

Book Hour - Jennifer Ward

On Mindy's show today, she was joined by Jennifer Ward author of I Love Dirt!: 52 Activities to Help You and Your Kids Discover the Wonders of Nature.

The activities sound pretty interesting, although basic. My kids (who are likely older than the target) love to get outside and do their own thing and really don't like for me to direct them, so I'm not sure it would work for us. The advice given on the show is mostly "natural" to us already. But I will likely put it on my library list to peruse further before deciding on whether it would be useful to us.

Mindy made a great point : Kids can help us slow down and we need to be sure to slow down for them instead of asking them to speed up for us.

Again, so natural for us: Don't inhibit the play. Who cares if the clothes get dirty? My kids are almost never sick, and I have never been germ-wary. They have built up some great immunity, I believe.

and Jennifer Ward's site.

Her newest book is for pre-teens Let's Go Outside.

Book Hour - JDRFI Doggie Treat Cook Book

Today Mindy interviewed j. Bernard Ralph, author of The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International Doggie Treat Cook Book.

He described many of the doggie treats in the book and talked about how he will write many more ....

Listen to Your Buds

This new Listen To Your Buds initiative aims to put kids in charge of their long-term hearing health. May is Better Hearing and Speech Month.

About 1,500 Washington, DC, metro area elementary students will attend a fun and informative “Listen To Your Buds” concert with artist Billy Jonas at the George Washington University Lisner Auditorium. The event starts at 10:30 am on Wednesday, April 29th and will be emceed by “Absolutely Mindy” from Sirius-XM Satellite Radio’s Kids Place Live channel.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and Parents' Choice Foundation have formed a national coalition of leading musicians who are popular with young children to promote safe usage of personal audio technology. The first "Listen To Your Buds" concert was held in Chicago in November, and the organizations plan more events for school children in Los Angeles and New Orleans later this year. Visit www.listentoyourbuds.org to see a video showing the kids’ energetic reaction to this first event.

Many kids depend on personal audio technology to listen to music, play games and talk on the phone. The technology itself is not the problem, but the length of time and volume levels may pose a threat to future hearing. A new public awareness campaign aims to educate kids to develop healthy habits before they suffer permanent hearing loss.

Did you know?...
...sustained listening to sounds over 85 decibels can cause permanent hearing loss.
…a newly announced European Union sponsored study found that listening to sounds at high volumes for more than an hour a day each week will likely cause permanent hearing loss after five years.
… that research published in August predicts that the prevalence of hearing loss in the United States will rise significantly due to the growing use of personal audio technology, among other factors.
… that a recent poll shows that more than half of high school students report at least one symptom of hearing loss.
… that you can protect your kids’ hearing by simply turning down the volume; limiting listening time; and upgrading headphones.

    Mindy and Zooglobble

Mindy "sneak attacked" Stefan Shepard from Zooglobble.com. Stefan is the "wizard" of kindie rock; keeping his ear to the ground, keeping everyone up-to-date on the latest news in kids' music.

Stefan talked about his recent "KidVid Tournament 2009" and how Secret Agent 23 Skidoo won against The Jimmies by, get this, 23 votes! Stefan and Mindy tried to Sneak Attack Secret Agent 23 Skidoo, but got the machine and left a rambling message (what else).

Stefan mentioned the new Ziggy Marley CD as well as the Renee and Jeremy CD coming soon -- we hope that KPL picks up a track from it.

Stefan mentioned that he loves the unpredictability of the Absolutely Mindy show, as do we.......

Mindy started off with a little set of SteveSongs songs. I guess to lament that he is leaving the 13under13 after having been on for a VERY long time. We love Steve, but it is time for something new in the countdown. Too bad that he left the countdown just days before we will see him play at the White House (fingers crossed).

My kids are totaly ga-ga over Pink!, so they are thrilled with the new song. If everything works out, we'll see Rocknoceros this week too.... WOW!

What Doctor Noize had to Say About Mindy

A Wee Bit Of Clarification On Yesterday’s Noizeletter…:

For those with XM Radio... You may have heard me on XM Kids Radio yesterday. XM Kids Program Director, Absolutely Mindy, called me live on her nationally broadcast show yesterday to assist me in perpetrating this little hoax to a nationwide audience. People like Mindy do not come around very often; when they do they are generally institutionalized. I love Mindy so much -- she is like those legendary DJ's in the early days of rock radio with an unerring sense of fun who played and said whatever they liked on air. Mindy is planning to play my fake High School Musical 4 track Follow Your Dreams on air a few times in the next week. This is because she is Absolutely Crazy. So listen for it! Her show is great.
